What is a thesis?
The thesis, as well as the bachelor, rigorous and dissertation thesis, belongs to university theses. Successful writing and defense of the diploma thesis leads to the completion of the second degree of university studies and to the gaining of the academic title of engineer (Ing.), Master (Mgr.) Or master of art (MgA.). The diploma thesis is thus in the form of a scientific text through which the student demonstrates his / her ability to use the acquired theoretical knowledge and practical skills in a particular scientific work. The basic difference between bachelor’s and master’s thesis lies in the depth and quality of the given topic. Individual steps in writing a thesis
The first step in writing a thesis is to choose a topic for it. The choice of the thesis topic depends entirely on the student’s choice and his agreement with the supervisor. As a rule, the student has a choice of a large number of topics (as opposed to the selection of topics in the seminar paper or paper). After choosing a topic, the student, together with his / her supervisor, compiles a timetable for the elaboration of the thesis and the envisaged list of sources of work. This part of the thesis is very demanding on working with professional texts and on using proper citation standards. The practical part of the thesis consists of applying the acquired theoretical knowledge to the given research problem. The practical part of the thesis serves to verify the diploma’s ability to apply theoretical knowledge of his field in practice. From the research carried out in the practical part of the thesis, the graduate then submits the output in the form of a discussion of the research results achieved and compares these results with predetermined hypotheses. Diploma thesis writing style
The thesis is defined as a professional work, so it is necessary to write it in a professional language. The use of professional language at the level expected from a master’s degree student is one of the basic criteria for evaluating this qualification thesis. The thesis can be written, as well as bachelor or seminar, in the first or third person of the singular or in the first person plural. However, the use of a person must be uniform throughout the work. An important part of the thesis is also a personal opinion or attitude to the chosen problem, but when it is manifested it is necessary to take extra care. The graduate must be aware of the fact that it is not a consideration (essay), where personal opinion is the basis of the text, nor is it a paper where personal opinion is not mentioned at all. At present there is no fixed structure of criteria in the evaluation of diploma, bachelor or doctoral theses. In spite of this, it is possible to identify several basic criteria by which the supervisors and opponents orient themselves in their assessment. The first is the formal aspect of the work. The formal arrangement of the thesis includes observance of all binding standards for diploma work determined by individual departments of higher education institutions, correct division of work, adherence to all principles in text structuring and formally correct citation of resources. Another important criterion is working with resources. The basis of this assessment criterion is the adequate selection of literature in terms of suitability and significance of the individual sources. The basic criteria include the content accuracy and balance of the whole scientific text. The basis of the criterion of content accuracy is the correctness of the diploma’s understanding of the professional texts he quotes. Another part of the content accuracy criterion is the correct methodology used in the research in the practical part. The opponent and the supervisor usually also evaluate the originality and contribution of the thesis. In particular, it evaluates whether the student has devoted adequate effort and time to the thesis, whether he has attempted an unconventional or original idea in solving the research problem and whether the thesis is beneficial for the given field.
